Outdoor Education - Overview

Outdoor education is an organised learning in which students participate in a variety of adventurous challenges and outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, canoeing, ropes courses and group games. The activities may take place in a local schoolyard, park or forest. 

What you need to know 

Outdoor education is aimed at learning skills such as team work, problem solving, fitness and navigation. Puzzles may be aimed a higher level of difficulty, e.g. decoders and may be physically more challenging, e.g. balance beams. Students should be encouraged to work together and maybe some missions should be designed for team work.

How run an outdoor ed event

You must make sure that you have familiarised yourself with the course and the activities; if may be prudent for your college or school to design the course for your students. Brief the students prior to to the beginning to ensure they understand the level of difficulty and safety instructions. Ensure that you are online through the trekker app at all times to receive and send messages. Be prepared to respond to students who struggle with some tasks and navigation difficulties.
